La Disciplina: A Treasure Chest of Art and History

Erected by the Disciplini confraternity at the end of the 1400s, the building currently housing the museum has gone through several transformations. Its present state is, above all, the result of interventions from the end of the 18th century, when the main façade was altered, and the sacristy and the bell-tower were added.

In 1953, although enlisted as a national monument, the building was on the brink of destruction as it was considered unstable. The national authorities prevented the loss of this important monument, suspending demolition works and requiring that what had been destroyed be rebuilt by funding renovation works and strengthening the building structure.

In the year 2000, the floor was removed to carry out insulation works, and that made possible to conduct an archaeological investigation within La Disciplina. This led to the recovery of plenty of pottery fragments from the Renaissance, which had ended up in the debris levelled at the time of the building construction.
